The media are largley to blame for the public's misconceptions about pitbulls and related breeds. While the reality is that a small percentage, estimated at less than 1%, of pitbulls do ANY damage, many people believe that the breed does harm. Owners and dog experts know this to be unfounded. We know that pitbulls, like other properly raised and socialized dogs, are sweet, smart and eager to please. We also know that some irresponsible owners do not look after the best interests of the public or their pitbulls. Perhaps most importantly, we know that the government ban gives credibility to the already incorrect public perception about pitbulls. And, we know that muzzling our good dogs based on their 'breed' rather than their behaviour, only makes us complicit in fear mongering and as well strips us of the right to INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY instead making pitbull (and other banned breed) owners targets for persecution.

UPDATED CONTENT:
In the months since the ban was passed, public understanding of the issues surrounding the breed-specific ban has increased and so has support for stopping the ban. As people become better educated about pitbulls and their owners they see through the government deceit and come on side to say that ALL dog owners need to be RESPONSIBLE for ALL BREEDS of dog. The public is beginning to see what pitbull owners and dog experts have known all along - BREED-SPECIFIC LEGISLATION DOES NOT IMPROVE PUBLIC SAFETY and can in fact make the public less safe by perpetuating a government supported myth that suggests that pitbulss are more dangerous than other dogs when in fact, all dogs can bite and do damage. Why shouldn't victims of other dogs bites be protected by the government????
